What Freedom Park is like
Freedom Park is the park Charlotte shows visitors. The lake loop, the bandshell, the rows of mature willow oaks — it is the civic image of green space in this city, and it is worth the drive from Montibello a few times a year even though closer options exist.
It is also the busiest. Festival weekends, the Fourth of July, and any mild Saturday in April bring crowds that make parking a real exercise. Arriving before ten is the difference between an easy morning and circling Princeton Avenue.
The connection to Little Sugar Creek Greenway is what extends it. From the park you can walk or ride north toward Uptown on a continuous paved corridor, which is something none of the southeast greenways currently offer.
